WHU Athletics U19 Tier 2 Provincials Champions

An amazing weekend.  Here is the weekend breakdown

First game against Airdrie – too smoky and game could not be played.   Decided by penalty shootout which we won 3-2.  Max made three excellent saves.

Second game against CNS United. 1-0 for them at half.  Thunder delay.  Afterwards, we just could not get into rhythm.  Lost 3-0.  Josh hurt his obliques; CNS lost their first game in a penalty kicks against Edmonton 1 (Spruce Grove Saints) the evening before.    The Spruce Grove team is a very good tier 1 quality team that dominated EMSA league.

Gerardo calls a team meeting to settle everyone and discuss strategy.

Later in the day, Airdrie beats CNS.  Airdrie wins 2-1.  The door is open for the Athletics.  We have to beat both Med Hat and Spruce Grove.  Med Hat has lost both their games against Airdrie and Spruce Grove but kept the score very close.

Sunday morning third game against Med Hat – we come out on fire.  Very aggressive and score quickly.  Win the game 5-1.  We could have had more as we were constantly pushing through their defence but their keeper was making some good saves.  Aidan scored a hat trick, Josh got one on a corner header and Andy ran from end to end through their entire team and scored (wow).  Got rough and dirty at the end.

Final game against Spruce Grove.  Winner wins gold.  If we lose, silver or bronze depending on other results.  Very wet, windy and cold.  A tough competitive game.  Hard to play in the elements.  Ty, and Joey are unable to play all weekend.  TJ played first three games but re-injure his knee a bit. A lot of players really stepped up and played their best game of the year:  Ben, Daniel, Ryan X, and Michael all played outstanding. Andy was a tower of power on the back line with Jack as usual steady and unbeatable.  Ryan P playing right back and also excellent.  A few chances on both sides and with about 10 to go, Aidan scores.  Ball was shot low and hard, skidded on wet grass and goalie fumbled the ball.  We lock it down and game ends 1-0.  Boys are absolutely elated.  Quite a celebration.

For Athletics – fifth provincial tournament in last 6 seasons all in tier 2.  One gold, two silver and fair play.  Quite a nice run.

After a lot of practices, hard work in their games, great parent support and a lot of thinking from their coaches SC_07, Falcons, Gunners, Revolution, Warriors are heading to 2018 City Finals game; all West Hills United family is rooting for you; let’s bring more wins and above all have fun playing this beautiful game.
